Hi Brianne,
The first step is setting one up - which so many people never get round to doing!
In terms of spreading the word - facebook and twitter are the key starting points. And then other blogs. You want other people with similar conditions and experiences to read this and so SEO is important - when people search on google, you want people to find you. The best way of achieving this is to do some link building. By this I mean get other blog sites to link to yours, and you link to other peoples from yours. Google looks out for these and pushes you further up the rankings for doing so. The bigger the other blogs (i.e) if you were talking about Cancer and Cancer Research blogged about your blog) the more 'points' you get and the further up the ranking you go.
If you can find other similar sites, help groups, hospitals, NHS sites etc then get the message spread around there. i.e.) http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Scoliosis/Pages/Introduction.aspx
I hope this helps a bit. If I can see anything else, I'll let you know. It's important that your content is what people want to comment on so don't be afraid of finishing your post with a question, or invite peopole to share their experiences. The more comments you get, the more engagement you're getting and the more people will know about you.
And don't forget to keep it up - people lose interest if you only blog once a year!
